There is something striking about looking at a photograph of a teenager from the 1970s. The confidence, the color, the sheer audacity of what they chose to wear speaks louder than any fashion editorial ever could.

These were not curated outfits assembled for a camera. They were real kids, in real hallways and real streets, wearing exactly what felt true to who they were. And what they wore told the whole story.

The hangover of the late-sixties counterculture was still very much present in the early part of the decade. Bell-bottoms, tie-dye, and peasant blouses were standard high school fare. 

Mexican peasant blouses and gaucho pants were popular alongside boldly colored and patterned ethnic-inspired clothing, and hip-hugger jeans with maximum flare were all the rage.

Teenage girls paired flowy tops over wide-leg denim, while boys showed up to class in denim-on-denim combinations that somehow always worked. The look was relaxed, earthy, and unapologetically lived-in.

A typical early-decade outfit for a high school girl might look something like this: a loose, off-the-shoulder peasant blouse in cream cotton, tucked loosely into a pair of rust-colored corduroy bell-bottoms that grazed the floor, finished with a pair of wooden clogs or woven leather sandals.

Gypsy hoop earrings, a macramé belt, and a crocheted bag completed the picture. Accessories like sunglasses, bangles, and hoop earrings were central to the look, not afterthoughts.

Boys pulled together similar energy with fringed suede vests layered over printed shirts, wide-collar button-ups in earthy plaids, and straight-leg or slightly flared jeans cuffed at the ankle.

Color was everywhere, and it was bold. Palettes leaned into warm, saturated tones: mustard yellow, burnt orange, olive green, rust, and deep brown dominated both wardrobes and fabric patterns.

Corduroy, velvet, and silky nylon printed shirts with wide collars were worn across genders, giving everyday outfits a texture and warmth that synthetic fabrics of the following decade would never quite replicate.

Psychedelic prints and geometric patterns were common on shirts, skirts, and jackets, making the average school hallway look more like an art installation than a classroom corridor.

As the decade progressed, the silhouette shifted but stayed just as bold. The defining shape of the mid-to-late seventies for both boys and girls was tight on top and loose at the bottom.

Fitted turtlenecks, snug T-shirts, and form-hugging sweaters were paired with wide-leg trousers or flared jeans that swept the floor.

Long knit cardigan vests layered over blouses and pants were everywhere, either left open and flowing or belted at the waist, adding a relaxed, slightly bohemian structure to otherwise casual outfits.

A girl heading to school in 1975 might wear a ribbed turtleneck in camel brown under a short knit vest, paired with high-waisted flares in a warm tobacco shade, with cork-platform sandals adding three inches to her height.

Her male classmate, meanwhile, could easily be spotted in a rust-colored Qiana shirt with a wide printed collar left open at the chest, paired with straight khaki chinos and a pair of suede Wallabees.

Platform shoes were everywhere, as were wedge-heeled sandals, knee-high boots, and chunky clogs, all of which added both height and an unmistakable sense of drama to even the most casual outfit.

Comfortable shoes like Hush Puppies, clogs, and woven leather sandals were considered just as fashionable as heels, reflecting the decade’s broader appetite for both style and ease.

By the late seventies, Earth shoes and Wallabees had also found their place on teenage feet alongside Pro-Keds in blue and white, as a slightly cleaner, more put-together look began to take hold among the prep-leaning crowd.

Then came disco, and the wardrobe shifted again. By the mid-seventies, synthetic fabrics like polyester and rayon made their way into everyday teen dressing, ideal for the shiny, body-conscious silhouettes the disco era demanded.

For school dances and weekend nights, teenage girls reached for halter tops in satin or jersey, worn with high-waisted flares or wrap skirts that swirled on the dance floor.
Clingy Lycra stretch pants and sequin-dusted tops designed to catch the light were the evening uniform, a stark but thrilling contrast to the earthier looks worn to class that same week.

Tube tops paired with wide-leg trousers became a standard warm-weather combination, simple enough for a Saturday afternoon but bold enough to turn heads.
Hair was its own statement. Women and teenage girls largely wore their hair long throughout the decade, often with a center or side part.

The feathered, voluminous style made famous by Farrah Fawcett and the cast of Charlie’s Angels became one of the most imitated looks of the era, and students across the country attempted to recreate that signature windswept volume.
Boys wore their hair longer than previous generations had, with shaggy layers and slightly unkempt cuts that blurred the line between casual and intentional.

The natural Afro, worn proudly and prominently, was equally a defining image of the decade, representing both beauty and cultural identity.

What made 1970s teen fashion so compelling was how much it meant. Clothing was not decoration. It was a declaration. 
Whether a teenager was drawn to the breezy, hippie-influenced layers of the early decade or the shinier, disco-ready energy of its later years, the choice was always deliberate.
